Marimekko joins Finland’s Shanghai World Expo 2010 project
Enthralling Marimekko design can be found and experienced in the Finnish pavilion at the ShanghaiWorld Expo in a variety of forms: in the exhibition itself as well as in the decoration of different facilities
and the clothing worn by the staff. The Expo will run from 1 May to 31 October 2010.
According to its internationalisation strategy, Marimekko wants to communicate its design and
corporate philosophy to audiences in the most interesting forums in the world. The Shanghai World
Expo provides a great stage for the company to tell tens of millions of visitors about the timeless,
sustainable Marimekko design and the joy it brings to the everyday lives of people. The Expo also
offers Marimekko the opportunity to receive valuable consumer feedback from the potential and
interesting Chinese market. The theme of the Shanghai Expo is ”Better City – Better Life”; in its
participation, Finland emphasises the key elements of good life: well-being, competence and the
environment.
The impressive, sculptural Finnish pavilion, called ”Kirnu” (Giant’s Kettle), was designed by the
Helsinki-based JKMM Architects. According to the architects, the pavilion portrays Finland in
microcosm, presenting both Finland and its society to the world. The financing for Finland’s World
Expo project comes largely from the Ministry of Employment and the Economy; Finpro is responsible
for the planning and implementation of the project. A number of leading Finnish companies are also
involved, with the main sponsors being Kone and Nokia, together with Greater Helsinki Promotion.
Around 80 million people are expected to visit the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
